What are some of the themes/messages of Donnie Darko?

I get the whole time travel thing. That's what the movie is about....not what it means. When I watched this movie I immediately got the feeling that it was a social commentary...not just a superhero flick. And an EXTREMELY cynical view of society. Like the 'Sparkle Motion' where all the parents and audience members of the show applauding the young girls' dance (which was clearly viewed negatively if you look at how they describe the teacher), being compared side-by-side with Donnie burning down his house, making it almost as if society is applauding the act of arson. It's almost like a 'Catcher in the Rye' kind of philosophy, or Jean-Jacques-Rousseau-style. I find it fascinating, and can to some extent, and i think everyone can, relate to it. What does everyone else think? Do you feel that it's a social commentary? What is the message that's being brought out by the movie?
