I have a chinese algae eater in my tank for a while, i am wondering if i can still use tetra algae control?

if you put in a product to cut down on algae, what is the fish suppose to eat? I would cut down on the time the light is on in the day time. you will have light from the rooms windows coming in and use the light mainly at night.
