Is this a good mix for a fresh water community tank?

Yes, this is a very good ortment for a 29 gallon. Eventually (perhaps in a year or two the angelfish and synodontis might need more room, depending on how much you feed them). You can put plants in this tank as none of the abovementioned fish are diggers or plant eaters. As far as filtration, I would use an AquaClear 50 rather than a thirty on this tank, as it is approaching it's limit.
